The Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has emphasized that local government financial autonomy can be achieved in Nigeria if the surrounding complexities and ambiguities are addressed.

Hon. Ogundoyin said this at the Oyo South Senatorial District meeting of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held at Ido Local Government Secretariat, Ibadan on Wednesday.

The Speaker noted that resolving these issues would enhance service delivery, governance, community engagement, and economic development at the local government level.

“There is the need to clarify the Concurrent and Exclusive lists in Nigeria’s Constitution for effective local government financial autonomy.  Unlocking true local government autonomy will empower local communities, enabling them to respond better to community needs. Recall that, Oyo State House of Assembly passed the Administrative Autonomy Bill for Local Government. Local governments must be allowed to generate revenue independently among other issues.”

Ogundoyin also urged PDP members to intensify their membership drive and mobilization efforts, citing unity and cooperation as crucial for the party’s success in future elections.

“I will like to welcome everyone to Oyo South Senatorial District Meeting of our great party here in Ido Local Government Secretariat, Ibadan. This is another opportunity for us to deliberate on ways of moving the Senatorial District forward. We need to amplify the vision of PDP, attracting new supporters and members to our fold. The various achievements of His Excellency, Engr Seyi Makinde in all sectors are enough to attract new members and supporters to the PDP in our senatorial district and by extension in Oyo State. However, we must also continue to foster unity and cooperation amongst all members irrespective of our status in the party,” Oyo Speaker said.
