A member representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, Hon. Yekini Idiaye, has taken over the Speakership seat of the Edo State House of Assembly following the resignation of Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku on Monday.
Agbebaku resigned amid an impeachment process initiated by the lawmakers.
The new Speaker, Hon. Idiaye, is a third-term lawmaker in the Edo State House of Assembly.
The emergence of Idiaye was said to have been influenced by the gentlemen’s zoning arrangement in the Assembly, which provides that when the Governor is from the Edo Central Senatorial District, the Speaker should come from Edo North.
Idiaye, being the ranking member from the Edo North Senatorial District, was subsequently elected Speaker.
According to the new Speaker, without the zoning arrangement, the Deputy Speaker would have automatically succeeded Agbebaku.
