President Bola Tinubu has expressed his determination to reform criminal justice administration in Nigeria.
To that effect, the President has transmitted a legislative proposal to the Senate.
The bill seeks to repeal the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and re-enact the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2026.
The proposed law would provide for the establishment of a Criminal Justice Monitoring Council for courts in the Federal Capital Territory and other federal courts across the country.
In the communication to the Senate, President Tinubu said the proposed legislation would address procedural gaps and identified challenges that have, over time, hindered the quick dispensation of justice.
It is also intended to reflect developments in criminal justice, the deployment of technology and innovations, as well as other measures for effective compliance and implementation by concerned institutions.
