The 7th edition of the Gateway Tertiary Institutions Games, GATIG 2026, will end on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The multi-sports event, which kicked off on Monday, September 1, featured student-athletes from tertiary institutions across Ogun State competing in about 10 sporting events.
The sports include football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, chess, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo, badminton and Ayo, a traditional Nigerian board game.
The closing ceremony will host key stakeholders in education and sports. Expected dignitaries include vice chancellors, heads of participating institutions, Student Union leaders, and government officials.
Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, will serve as the chief host of the GATIG 2026 finals.
GATIG was inaugurated in 2006 during the administration of former Governor Gbenga Daniel. Hon. Bukola Olopade was Special Adviser on Youth and Sports at the time.
The Gateway Tertiary Institutions Games is designed to promote sporting excellence, healthy competition, and grassroots sports development among students in Ogun tertiary institutions.
Speaking ahead of the grand finale, GATIG Council President, Mr. Kehinde Adeyemi, commended the standard of competition and conduct of student-athletes.
Adeyemi, who is also Director of Sports at Olabisi Onabanjo University, appreciated Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for supporting sports development.
“I want to appreciate our sports-loving governor, Dapo Abiodun, for creating an enabling environment for grassroots sports development. We must also thank our amiable Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, for his support for school sports,” he said.
The organisers said GATIG 2026 continues to provide a platform for discovering young sporting talents and strengthening unity among students.
”To the students, it’s time to leave the books and lace the boots,” Adeyemi added.
