Spain have officially replaced Argentina as the number one team in the world following their dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory in the World Cup final in the United States.
The latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings released on Monday, July 20, 2026, saw La Roja gain 121.17 points during the tournament to reach a total of 1,995.88 points, courtesy of Ferran Torres’ 106th-minute winner in the final.
Argentina, who entered the tournament as defending champions and briefly regained the top spot after beating England in the semi-finals, slipped to second with 1,970.37 points after the final defeat.
France remain third on 1,948.97 points despite a 6-4 loss to England, while England climbed to fourth with 1,922.83 points after their high-scoring win over Les Bleus. Brazil complete the top five on 1,804.92 points.
Morocco continue to make history as Africa’s top-ranked team after a run to the World Cup quarter-finals pushed them to sixth in the world with 1,803.99 points. Egypt also climbed above Nigeria on the continent after reaching the Round of 16, with the Pharaohs now Africa’s second-best team. Nigeria dropped to fourth in Africa but remain 26th globally.
Other major movers include Norway, who jumped 12 places to 19th after stunning Brazil 2-1, and Mexico, who returned to the top 10 in 10th place.
Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands sit 7th, 8th and 9th respectively in a tightly packed mid-tier. Traditional powers Germany and Italy dropped out of the top 10 to 12th and 15th, while Colombia and Croatia occupy 11th and 13th.
The top 20 is rounded out by Japan, Senegal, Norway and Uruguay. The rankings will remain unchanged until the next FIFA update on October 7, 2026.
