Due to an increase in the rate of violence as a result of the election campaign, the National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed worry.
The Chairman of the Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, said that despite the fact that the general election is three months away; the Commission had tracked 50 attacks across the country since campaigning began just over a month ago.
INEC boss expressed the worry at an emergency meeting on Friday following attacks on two of the Commission’s offices.
“The commission is worried that if no urgent and decisive steps are taken, the attacks will intensify as we approach the election date,” the INEC chief said in a statement.
“We need to take decisive steps to stem the ugly trend.”
“The political class plays perhaps the most critical role in ensuring peaceful elections. We must all rise to the occasion. Nigerians are watching us,” Yakubu said.
