No fewer than 1,000 residents of Ibadan were treated for various health issues such as Malaria, Diabetes, Hypertension, and Cataract under a medical outreach programme organised by DAKA Foundation, on Saturday.
At the event held at Mapo hall, Ibadan, minor surgeries were also carried out for various health conditions aside from eye glasses, drugs and other prescriptions given to the various persons who turned up to be tested and treated.
Founder/Chief Executive Officer, DAKA Foundation, Dr Adesina Abidikugu stated that the need to help the poor and less privileged who cannot afford getting quality health informed the medical outreach.
Stressing that provision of healthcare services is expensive and cannot be left to the government alone, Abidikugu called on individuals and groups to continue to support the government in the interest of having a healthy society.
“The initiative is to give back to society. I reflect on the problems around here and see how I can help and give back to my society.
“Provision of healthcare services is expensive and the government needs support to help people get the kind of treatment they desperately need.
“Health cannot be left to the government alone and individuals need to help in healthcare delivery.
“We are trying to treat as many as possible for Malaria, Diabetes, Hypertension, Cataract and other health challenges.
“With this initiative, we are assisting the people such that money they will have used to treat themselves can be used for another purpose,” Abidikugu said.
One of the coordinators of the outreach, Bello Idowu said though the Governor Seyi Makinde administration had been doing enough to improve the state’s health sector, it needed support from well-meaning individuals and groups.
While noting that the residents of Ibadan South East/North East federal constituency were primary beneficiaries of Saturday’s outreach, Bello said DAKA foundation planned to organise more of such medical missions.
Beneficiaries to include Taiwo Mufutau, Olakunle Fadairo, Muibat Busari, Jelili Lawal praised the DAKA foundation initiative which they noted came at a time when people were struggling to get money to feed themselves let alone go for medical checkups or seek treatment.
Aside from the programme helping to improve their health, the beneficiaries said the intervention by DAKA foundation will also help reduce poverty in the society.
