Rivers Crisis Is Part Of Party Internal Wrangling- Wike

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has said that the ongoing power tussle in Rivers State is a common political party internal wrangling.

The former governor of Rivers State, however, said that the issue will be settled using the party’s mechanisms.

Receiving South-South leaders at his office on Tuesday, Wike emphasised the importance of holding his base to maintain his political relevance.

He maintained that once he loses his base as a politician, he has lost his relevance politically.

The FCT Minister Wike disclosed that no amount of calumny levelled against him would make him lose sleep, saying that the right thing must be done.

“All of us want to be politically relevant; all of us want to maintain our political structure.

“Is it not your political structure? Will you allow anybody to just cut you out immediately? Everybody has a base. If you take my base, am I not politically irrelevant?

“In politics, there is lots of internal wrangling.

“But to come out and say ‘Oh they want to do this against me, it will not work.’ I had every power then to say where this thing is going. So, when things are wrong, you ask questions. It is a party affair. The party knows how they resolve their own mechanism; it is not an ethnic affair.

“Our party is coming to it, that is what I will say. Every politician has his own interest,” the former governor added.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has welcomed the intervention of President Bola Tinubu into the Rivers State crisis, calling on all parties to sheathe their sword.

This was contained in a communiqué issued by the governors on Tuesday evening after they met at the Oyo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja to discuss the crisis in the oil-rich state and other national issues.

The communiqué signed by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Bauchi State Bala Mohammed reads:

“The PDP Governors were alarmed at the recent developments in Rivers State and welcomed the intervention of Mr. President to bring the crises to an end.

“The meeting urged all parties to the Rivers State crises to sheath their sword and resort to peaceful means of resolution. The Forum further offers its platform for a quick and just containment of the issues involved.”
