The Rivers State House of Assembly has begun the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The House has also removed the Majority Leader, Edison Ehie and three other lawmakers.

The impeachment proceeding against the governor and removal of the Majority Leader was carried out during the emergency sitting on Monday.

The emergency sitting was as a result of burning of the state hallowed chambers on Sunday night.

House Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, expressed sadness over what he described as arson, alleging that the incident was supervised by the Government House and Ehie from Ahoada East.

Three items were brought before the House on Monday: the removal of Ehie as House Leader, the impeachment of Fubara and the suspension of Ehie, and three other lawmakers — Victor Okoh from Bonny, Goodboy Sokari also from Ahoada West as well as Adolphus Timothy from Opobo Nkoro.

Sylvanus Nwankwo from Omuma presented the notice of impeachment as signed by 24 members.

The governor is accused of acts of gross misconduct unbecoming of his office.

The Speaker asked that the notice of impeachment be forwarded to the governor and allow the legal process to take its course.

Meanwhile, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in his reaction, downplayed any impeachment move against him.

Fubara insisted that he had committed no offence to warrant being impeached by the State House of Assembly.

He spoke while addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex in Port Harcourt.

The governor assured the people of the state of getting the dividends of democracy.

“Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment.

“Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time I will address the press,” Fubara said.
