The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has joined police organisations around the world to mark the United Nations International Day of Police Cooperation, highlighting the powerful role of international law enforcement partnerships in combating transnational crime, protecting vulnerable persons and strengthening public safety.
The observance underscores the growing need for international police cooperation as criminal networks increasingly operate across national borders. Online fraudsters target victims in multiple jurisdictions, while organised crime groups move people, illicit goods and criminal proceeds from one country to another.
Effective policing in this environment requires timely intelligence sharing, coordinated investigations and sustained collaboration among law enforcement agencies across borders.
Nigeria Police Force Marks International Day of Police Cooperation
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, CSP Ani Iniedu, international police cooperation continues to produce practical results for Nigeria.
The collaboration has supported the identification and location of victims, recovery of stolen property, tracking of fugitives, disruption of organised criminal networks and the fight against cyber-enabled crime.
The Nigeria Police Force said these partnerships have become increasingly important in ensuring that criminals cannot exploit international borders to evade arrest and prosecution.
INTERPOL Collaboration Strengthens Nigeria’s Fight Against Transnational Crime
In the year under review, INTERPOL collaboration and international law enforcement cooperation contributed to the arrest of Victor Benjamin Fejemirokum, a murder fugitive wanted in connection with the abduction and murder of an FRSC officer and her daughter in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Following efforts to trace his movements after a viral social media video surfaced, Fejemirokum was located in Ghana and arrested by the Ghana Police Service. He was subsequently repatriated to Nigeria to face the relevant authorities.
The case demonstrates how cross-border intelligence sharing and cooperation can help law enforcement agencies locate suspects who attempt to evade justice by moving between countries.
International Police Cooperation Helps Track and Arrest Fugitives
International cooperation also facilitated the arrest of Mark Sunny Okoh, a Brazilian national wanted in connection with cocaine trafficking.
Okoh reportedly fled Brazil after jumping bail and was later arrested at Okota, Lagos, following international coordination. Extradition proceedings to Brazil were subsequently initiated.
The Nigeria Police Force said such cooperation strengthens the ability of law enforcement agencies to pursue fugitives across jurisdictions and helps ensure that international borders do not prevent victims and affected communities from accessing justice.
Nigeria Police Force Deepens Cross-Border Law Enforcement Partnerships
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with INTERPOL and other international law enforcement partners.
According to the IGP, effective information sharing, coordinated investigations, capacity building and cross-border operational support remain essential to confronting emerging security threats.
These partnerships are also critical to ensuring that criminals are unable to exploit jurisdictional boundaries to escape justice.
