The Oyo State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Basic Education has directed the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to investigate the matter between the school proprietress and a parent in a video circulating on social media.
The Committee, in a statement by its Vice-Chairman, Hon. Oluwafowokanmi Oluwafemi also urged the ministry to monitor the activities and conducts of the private school owners in the state.
He said the action of the school proprietress in the video is capable enough to sabotage the goodwill and efforts of the government to raise the standard of education in the state.
Hon. Fowokanmi pointed out that it is the responsibility of the school owners to provide necessary amenities and environment that will make teaching and learning conducive for both teachers and the pupils.
The lawmaker representing Ibadan South West state constituency 2 urged the ministry to sanction erring school owners or close down any school that failed to meet up to standard requirements established by the state government.
According to a viral video, the school proprietress had banned pupils from using the school toilet, the action that left a four year old pupil messing up herself by defecating on the body.
The parent of the pupil in question came to log the complaint about the incident, however, the proprietress said she could not allow the pupils to be messing up the school toilet, instead telling the parents to give their pupils toilet training and know the type of food they will give them.
Betterlife, as he fondly called said that the response of the proprietress to the parent was uncalled for, emphasizing that it is a direct signal that her school does not meet up with the basic requirements by the state Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
Hon. Oluwafowokanmi urged the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to investigate the matter and ensure that necessary actions are taken before the larger public starts labeling the state irresponsible because of one person’s unwelcoming attitude.
