2027 General Election: INEC Reassures Nigerians Of Ballot Integrity

2027 General Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reassured Nigerians and the international community of its commitment to neutrality, transparency and the integrity of the ballot ahead of the 2027 General Election, as the country enters the final 100-day countdown to the poll.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, gave the assurance on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting held to mark 100 days to the 2027 General Election.

The event took place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.

INEC Begins Final 100-Day Countdown to 2027 General Election

Amupitan said the Commission had moved from the planning stage into full execution ahead of the 2027 General Election, with election materials already in production, technology undergoing rigorous quality assurance and the voter register prepared for public scrutiny.

He said INEC was also systematically training its workforce as part of preparations for the election.

“As we begin this 100-day sprint to the 2027 General Election, we reassure the nation and the international community of our total commitment to neutrality, operational excellence, and the sacred integrity of the ballot box,” the INEC Chairman said.

He described the 100-day milestone as more than a countdown, saying it represents a call to action and the beginning of the final phase of preparations for an election that could serve as a benchmark for transparency, integrity and peace.

The INEC Chairman recalled that since assuming office on October 23, 2025, the Commission had conducted several off-cycle elections.

These included the Anambra, Ekiti and Osun governorship elections, the FCT Area Council elections and several federal and state bye-elections.

According to Amupitan, reports from local and international observers indicated that the elections met the benchmark for electoral integrity.

He said the polls also provided an opportunity for INEC to test structural improvements ahead of the 2027 General Election, including early deployment of ad hoc personnel and sensitive election materials, improved logistics and intelligence-led security arrangements.

INEC issued the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election on February 26, 2026.

The timetable contains 14 statutory milestones, nine of which had been completed as of October 6, according to the Commission.

Amupitan said the timetable had been converted into an operational plan covering INEC’s 23 headquarters departments and directorates, 36 state offices, the Federal Capital Territory and all 774 Local Government Area offices.

The Commission said the coordinated approach was designed to ensure that preparations for the 2027 General Election remain on schedule across the country.

103 Million Voters Registered for 2027 General Election

On the voter register, INEC disclosed that the three phases of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise produced 10,772,421 new registered voters.

The development brings the National Register of Voters to approximately 103 million ahead of the 2027 General Election.

INEC said the voter register will be displayed for public scrutiny from October 9 to October 15, 2026.

The Commission also announced that the distribution of Phase 1 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to Local Government Area centres would begin on Friday, October 9.

The public display of the register is expected to give voters an opportunity to verify their details and raise objections where necessary ahead of the election.

INEC also provided an update on political party preparations for the 2027 General Election.

According to Amupitan, 18 of the 22 registered political parties submitted a total of 36 presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

The Final List of Candidates for the National Assembly was published on September 12, 2026.

The Commission said the final list of candidates for governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections would be published on October 10, 2026.

INEC Procures New BVAS Devices

On election technology, the INEC Chairman disclosed that production of 57,000 new Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices was at an advanced stage.

Some of the new BVAS devices had already been delivered, while procurement for the printing of ballot papers and result sheets was nearing completion.

The technology and logistics preparations form part of INEC’s wider effort to ensure a credible and efficient 2027 General Election.

Amupitan acknowledged the timely release of statutory allocations by the Federal Government, saying the funding had enabled INEC to meet international vendor obligations, finance the production of critical election technology and upgrade election infrastructure.

However, he called for the prompt release of outstanding funds to enable the Commission to complete the remaining activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.

With 100 days remaining until the first ballot, INEC said its focus is now firmly on executing the final stages of its election plan while maintaining neutrality, operational efficiency and confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
