Remi Aboderin, the President of the West African Boxing Union (WABU) and Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC), was thrilled and full of commendation over the massive turnout of spectators witnessed during the Super Fight Boxing Show organized by Glorious Sports Promotions at the indoor sports hall of Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan, on Sunday.
The hall was full to the brim with boxing enthusiasts that came to cheer the boxers in the 13-bout boxing show, where Azeez Lateef, the Sledge Puncher, recorded the fastest knockout of the night, finishing his opponent in two minutes and forty-three seconds.
Speaking with the media after the show, Abodering expressed his joy at seeing boxing thriving again in Ibadan with a double show, after about six months since the last professional boxing show was held, and commended the Oyo NBBofC under the leadership of Hon. Gbenga Opaleye and its secretary, Olanrewaju Agiri.
“What I witnessed here tonight is quite encouraging and a good testament to the good work of the Oyo Board of NBBofC, under Hon. Gbenga Opaleye. The atmosphere was electric, thanks to the thousands of fans who showed up to witness this historic event,” said the secretary general of NBBofC.
He added “The enthusiasm displayed by the crowd not only highlighted the popularity of the sport but also underscored the importance of community support in revitalizing boxing in Ibadan. Moving forward, the board aims to organize more events that will further engage local talent and foster a new generation of boxers.”
Aboderin has however, ensured that boxing in Nigeria and West Africa satisfies global requirements by maintaining close relationships with international organizations such as the World Boxing Council (WBC) through his leadership positions. He has been involved in shaping boxing policies across Africa and beyond.
