Supreme Court Nullifies Rivers Council Election

The Supreme Court has annulled the Local Government election in Rivers State.

The election was conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on the 5th of October 2024.

This was contained in a judgement delivered by the Supreme Court on Friday.

The apex, in a judgment delivered by Justice Jamilu Tukur, declared that the election grossly violated the Electoral Act and therefore rendered invalid.

Justice Tukur, while reading the judgement, said the action of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) is declared void for lack of substantial compliance to the Electoral Act and guidelines as the electoral body continued voter registration even after announcing an election date.

According to the court, the processes leading to the conduct of a local government election were abridged in clear violation of Section 150 of the Electoral Act.
