Former Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who conducted the June 12, 1993 election, Professor Humphrey Nwosu has been announced dead.
He was the INEC chairman between 1989 and 1993.
Nwosu, who was born on October 2, 1941, died in the United States of America.
As the Chief Electoral Officer, Nwosu conducted the historic and widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll.
The election saw Chief Moshood Abiola, candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), emerge victorious, defeating Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC).
Nwosu released many of the election results despite being ordered to stop by the Ibrahim Babangida military regime. The election was later annulled.
