Ondo State government has granted clemency to 117 inmates currently serving prison terms in the state.
This is part of activities marking the celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary.
The clemency was signed by Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The decision was announced in a release signed by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who is also the Chairman of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
Ajulo said the transformative decision aimed at reforming the lives of those affected.
According to him, the clemency followed the recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, highlighting a commitment to rehabilitation and second chances within the justice system.
He listed the beneficiaries to include 19 convicts that would enjoy outright release, while some others’ death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment.
Also, several inmates will have their sentences reduced, paving the way for renewed hope and opportunities for reintegration into society
He said the governor signed the release orders on September 27, 2024, with the changes set to take effect on October 1, 2024, coinciding with the nation’s 64th Independence celebrations.
