ORUMOGEGE CUP 2024: Expert Seeks Government Intervention In Grassroot Sports Development

Son of the former football administrator in Nigeria, Dr. Amos Adamu, Joshua Adamu, has called on governments at all levels and well-meaning Nigerians to invest in grassroot sports development to curb social vices among the youth.

Speaking at a press briefing to herald the maiden edition of Orumogege Football Competition organised by Ogbomoso Youth Forum to commemorate one year anniversary of His royal Majesty, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, the Soun of Ogbomoso Land.

Joshua Adamu disclosed his belief in intentional and conscious efforts towards the development of sports from the grassroots. He maintained that the aim is to discover talents that will bless the world stage and put Nigeria on the world map of Sports.

“A country as big and blessed as Nigeria can not run from grassroot talent discovery.

“The purpose of grassroot development is to discover talents and to channel the energy of our youths away from bad vices to positive and economical benefit ventures through sports.”

Speaking on the strategy, Adamu said that the major grassroot development strategy is provision of enabling environment and world class facilities that will enable talents to match up with their contemporaries in other countries.

Joshua, however, expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the Soun of Ogbomoso Land, Oba Olaoye Ghandi on his first year anniversary on the throne.

“Orumogegehe tournament is a good one and it’s coming at a time where the youth and the nation are at a point where we need to remind ourselves who we are and stay positive and productive. Sport is a unifying factor and we have to project that through sports.

“My advice to the powers that be is to let’s develop sports and channel our youths energy to positive and profitable ventures so that they will shun social vices. And one of the ways to develop sports is to provide good facilities. Sports infrastructure also helps bring rapid development to the community,” He said.

The draws for the football competition, according to the Chairman of the tournament, Amos Ado will take place among the 32-team across Ogbomoso land and the kick off will follow in a few days after to mark the first year anniversary of Oba Olaoye Ghandi, Orumogege III. It will run through four weeks while the final of the tournament will hold on Boxing Day, December 26, 2024.
