The Nigeria Labour Congress, Oyo State council, has described the invitation to interrogate the National President of the Congress, Joe Ajaero as a strategy to delay the implementation of the new national minimum wage.
Comrade Kayode Martins, who is the Chairman of the Congress in the state, disclosed this during the solidarity visit to Oyo State Police Command, Eleyele on Thursday.
NLC Chairman, who said that the federal government wanted to use the invitation to disorganize the Congress, saying that any attempt by the Police to detained the Congress National President, Joe Ajaero beyond the reasonable time will not be tolerated.
Comrade Kayode Martins stated that Ajaero’s invitation by the Police was a tactics to delay the implementation of the N70,000 new national minimum wage.
It will be recalled that the Police, last week, invited Ajaero to its office over allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony.
However, NLC national headquarters, has directed the leaders of its 54 affiliate unions to accompany its President, Joe Ajaero, to the office of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Thursday over the allegations.
Speaking with newsmen at the Oyo Police Command, Com. Kayode Martins stated that as a noble and law abiding citizen of Nigeria, Ajaero should be prosecuted according to the law if found wanting of the offence been questioned for.
According to him, NLC will not take it easy with the Police if Ajaero is eventually detained beyond reasonable time after the questioning over what he described as fraudulent allegations.
He, however, said that the Union is waiting for the outcome of the questioning, adding that whatever happen at the Force headquarters in Abuja will determine what next to do because NLC is ready and steadfast.
The state Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Adejobi Akinade, assured the NLC that all its requests will be communicated to the appropriate quarters.
He emphasized that the police has the constitutional rights to invite any individual except the President, Vice President, Governors and Deputy Governors, who enjoy immunity for the period they occupy the position.
Adejobi disclosed that the action taken by the Nigeria Police Force by inviting the national President of NLC, is in line the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
