Oyo Govt To Host World School Athletics Trials

Ibadan will be agog as hundreds of schools and thousands of primary and secondary school students will converge in the ancient city to vie for places in the international school sports federation, World Athletics Trials.

The trial is meant to select Nigeria representatives at the World Schools Athletics Championship coming up in Bahrain later this year.

The competition will be in three categories; U-12 (for primary school pupils), U-15 (for junior secondary school students) and U-18 (for the senior secondary school students).

Speaking with our correspondent, the Chairman of Oyo State Athletics Association, Dr Isaac Friday Ogada, stated that plans and efforts are being made to have successful trials stressing that it is a thing of joy to bring a competition of such magnitude to Oyo state.

He also stated that it is another plus for the peoples’ governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde of Oyo state under his administration to host such a global event for the first time in history.

”I am happy this competition is coming to Oyo state and we shall do our best to ensure a successful meet,it will also showcase the rich hospitality and cultural heritage of the state as well as  good platform to unearth the wonderful talents in the state.It is also a good development that this is coming during the tenure of our sports loving governor His Excellency Engr Oluseyi Makinde.

“It will be a test run for Oyo state as we also plan to host the National sports festival,” Dr. Isaac Ogada concluded.

The arrival date for the competition is Monday 5th August 2024 while the competition proper will be on Tuesday to Thursday 6th to 8th August and departure will be on Friday 9th August 2024.
