Cholera: LG Chairman, Akinwole Advocates Hygienic Environment

The Executive Chairman of Akinyele Local Government, Hon. Akinwole Akinleye has called on residents of the council area to eat healthy food and ensure hygienic environment to curb the spread of cholera outbreak.

Hon. Akinleye made the call during a sensitization and awareness campaign on prevention of cholera around the major markets and strategic places within the local government.

The Chairman stressed that the reason for the awareness campaign is to prevent the spread of the disease, noting that ‘prevention is better than cure.’

Akinwole said that it is essential to prevent it rather than spending huge resources on cure, if not resulting in death.

He said the cost of living is high and food prices are on the high side, so it is better to set machinery in place to stop the spread of it.

Hon. Akinleye assured that he will not take health matter for granted, saying that it is one of the important sectors his administration will prioritize and makes sure all hands will be on deck for greater output in the entire Akinyele Local Government.

The council Boss reiterated that he will soon embark on treating wells and clearing of refuse in the markets within the council area in order to ensure a clean, safe and hygienic environment.

He said that all these will be done with the cooperation of market leaders, traders and community leaders.

Also speaking, the council Vice Chairman, Hon. Sakiru Akintunde, urged the market leaders and traders to join the council officials to carry out the awareness campaign to curb the spread of cholera in the local government.

He disclosed that Akinyele Local Government is a mixture of ethnic groups with commodity markets, emphasising that there is a need for quick action to prevent the outbreak.

The Director of Environment Health, Disease and Control, Sanitarian Olatunbosun highlighted vomit, stooling and dizziness as symptoms of the disease.

She said regular hand washing with soap, eating of hot food, and avoiding buying food that is not well cooked and properly covered as ways to prevent the spread of the disease.

Sanitarian Olatunbosun also urged the house owners to ensure provision of convenience in their various homes.

He advised that they should not hesitate to report any case of disease sighted and take the victims to the nearest hospitals.

In her remark, Dr. Dele Busari, Head of Local Government Administration, lauded the present administration for being proactive to every sensitive issue that concerns the citizen.

She encouraged the public to be vigilant and mindful of their health status.

In attendance is the Leader of the Legislative arm, Hon. Rafiu Kazeem Kolawale, Deputy Leader, Hon. Fakayode Basirat, Director of Admin and General Services, Alh. Musibau Ladele, Alhaja Olateju Bolatito and other party stalwarts.
