Family Attacks Health Workers In Ekiti Teaching Hospital

Some workers of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Accident and Emergency Ward, Ado-Ekiti have been attacked by the family of a patient who died in the hospital.

They alleged the health workers of negligence and incompetence.

The situation, which led to destruction of some properties, paralyzed other activities at the teaching hospital as a result of emergency and indefinite strike declared by labour unions at the Hospital.

According to an insider, said that one of the children (a son) and some members of the family including the drivers of a patient who died in the hospital this morning (Monday, January 15) alleged the health workers on duty of negligence and incompetence.

He stated further that the son said that their (health workers) incompetence and negligence led to the death of his father, thereby vandalizing property at the hospital and also injured himself in the process.

The source said that they chased away the health workers on duty and took away the corpse without paying any medical bill.

However, addressing the health workers as a result of the incident, the Ekiti State Chairman, Joint Negotiating Council, Mr. Femi Ajoloko said their lives were in danger due to incessant attacks on them by families of patients.

Mr. Ajoloko announced that the strike would not be called off until EKSUTH management and Ekiti State Government guaranteed their security.

Other labour leaders who spoke lamented shortage of medical personnel in the hospital and called on the government to do the needful.
