The chairmanship candidate in Ibadan North West under the platform of Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the forthcoming Oyo state local government election, Hon. Adesina Temitope has added his voice to the necessity of local government autonomy in Nigeria.
Hon. Temitope who addressed the newsmen in Ibadan, the state capital on Wednesday, said that for the local government to play its primary role as the closest government to the people, it must be autonomous.
The chairmanship candidate decried the current situation in the country where the state government has usurped the role of local government, especially in the area of revenue generation.
According to him “local government autonomy would bring infrastructural development to the rural communities and effective services delivery to the masses.
“If autonomy is achieved, it will bring back the good old days when local government was strong and infrastructural development was done in the rural area by local government chairmen,” he added.
Earlier, in his address to the residents and community leaders across the 11 wards of the local government, Temitope assured them of timely delivery of the dividend of democracy if he becomes the next local government chairman of Ibadan North West, next year.
He said his administration will ensure that no ward in the local government would be left out of his administration’s developmental projects.
“I want to assure every resident of this local government that no ward will be left untouched in terms of developmental projects my administration will embark upon when by the grace of God, I become the next chairman,” Temitope said.
The candidate who is the former chairman of the SDP in the local government also promised to implement the programmes of the party if elected.
Temitope said SDP is the only masses’ friendly party in Nigeria, and urged the people of the local government to vote for him in the April 2024 local government election.
