
Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and ex-governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Hon. Tajudeen Abbas have been elected as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 10th National Assembly.
While Senator Akpabio trounced Senator Abdul’aziz Yari to emerge the new Senate President, Hon. Abass defeated Idris Wase and Aminu Jaji on Tuesday at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
Akpabio, the former Akwa Ibom State governor was elected after scoring 63 votes defeating Senator Yari who scored 46 votes.
Abbas scored 352 votes of the total 359 votes cast while Jaji and Wase polled three votes each.
Meanwhile, in the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, who represents Kano North Senatorial District emerged unopposed as Senate Deputy President, in the House of Representatives, a member representing Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State, Benjamin Kalu emerged the Deputy Speaker after emerging unopposed.
The new Senate President succeeded Senator Ahmad Lawan, who is also a member of the 10th Senate, while the new Speaker, Abbas, who has been a member of the House since 2011 succeeded Femi Gbajabiamila who is now the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.
