
Traders and commercial drivers in Oyo State have urged Governor Seyi Makinde to follow the step of Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun to shut down banks refusing to collect old naira notes.
The residents, who expressed their displeasure during a peaceful protest on Wednesday, disclosed to ooduabulletin.com that the present situation is causing serious havoc to business transactions.
The cash crunch is a major issue ravaging the country and has led to led to series of protests across states.
Governor Dapo Abiodun has warned all commercial banks in Ogun State against refusing to accept old Naira notes from citizens, saying that those banks stand the chance of being shut down by the state government.
Governor Abiodun’s comments come shortly after the Supreme Court of Nigeria adjourned the case on the naira swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) till Wednesday, February 22 for hearing of the consolidated suits by 10 states.
The traders and commercial drivers, who trooped out to protest against refusal of commercial banks to collect the old naira notes, said that there is need for strict measures by the authority in the state to address the issue.
The protesters were seen blocking the movement of vehicles along major roads like New Garage-Challenge-Molete, Secretariat-Bodija in Ibadan metropolis.
The protest activity has led to the commercial banks in the affected areas being shut down operations, while security agencies including The Nigeria Police Force, Operation Burst and Amotekun were seeing on standby to avert the breakdown of laws and orders.
