With Messi, Underdog Saudi Arabia Stun Argentina

A brave and determined Saudi Arabia team stunned Argentina in a thrilling World Cup Group C opener in Lusail on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia came from behind to defeat the two-time world champions 2-1.

The 51 ranked Saudi Arabia team conceded an early goal after Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 10th minute of play.

But Saudi Arabia flipped the game on its head in the second half, as Saleh Al-Shehri leveled with a low effort and Salem Al Dawsari firing them ahead in the 53rd minute.

The Green Falcons demonstrated ruthlessness and ruggedness as they beat Argentina to secure only their fourth World Cup win in history and throw the group wide open.

Argentina came into the Qatar World Cup as one of the favourites, on the back of a 36-game unbeaten run that included winning the 2021 Copa America.

Lionel Scaloni’s team now has to do everything they can to maintain their chances of qualifying for the next stage of the competition.
