Following the indication of interest by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele to contest the presidential election in 2023, the Chairman of the independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, has said that the Commission will no longer routed the sensitive electoral materials through the Bank.
The INEC Chairman, Pro. Yakubu disclosed this while responding to questions in an ongoing dialogue in Abuja.
He said that several individuals and groups have raised serious concern about the sanctity of election materials kept with the CBN, following the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, indicating interest to contest for the country’s presidential seat hit the airwaves in recent months.
The INEC boss also specifically notes that, beginning from the Ekiti State governorship election, INEC will not keep its sensitive materials with the CBN.
He maintained that the decision of the Commission is to guarantee that electoral materials for the lined up elections are not compromised.
