Pressure Continues As Minister Lists Condition To Restore Twitter

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama

Nigeria’s government will soon bow to pressure as plans to lift the ban on the operation of twitter in the country are underway.

This was revealed during the meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama and diplomatic communities, where the minister said that action was taken against twitter to safeguard the unity of the country.

The minister, however, seeks understanding of diplomatic communities on the matter and joins the country in fighting insecurity.

Onyeama said this at a meeting with some envoys, adding that Twitter’s operations in Nigeria will be restored only if the platform can be used “responsibly.”

Asked when the ban will be lifted, Onyeama said there is no definite timeline for that, but added: “The condition would be responsible use of social media and that really has to be it.”

“We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing; why we have taken this measure is to stop them from being used as platforms for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities,” he also said.

Recall that the Nigerian government had on Saturday ordered the indefinite suspension of the microblogging site over alleged compromise of the country’s security.

The Nigerian Communications Commission, also on Monday directed a media organisation to suspend use of twitter for any of its communications.
