Supreme Court Orders Makinde To Pay-Off Sacked Chairmen

Governor Seyi Makinde

*Payment Duration slated Between August and March 2022

The Supreme Court of law in Abuja has ordered Oyo State Governor, Eng. Seyi Makinde to pay-off the sacked local government chairmen.

The Court ruled that the sacked chairmen were a product of election, saying that the governor was erred by dissolving them.

The apex court also awarded a sum of N20 million against the governor.

Governor Seyi Makinde sacked the council chairmen a few hours after he was sworn-in as the governor of the state on May 29, 2019.

The embattled chairmen were elected during the administration of the late former governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

The Supreme Court in its wisdom ordered the governor to pay the chairmen and councilors their salaries and allowances from 2019.

The judgment, which is not in line with the wish of the ALGON chairman, Prince Ayodeji Abass Alesinloye, who at various gatherings, disclosed that the chairmen will not accept compensation, rather, are preparing to return to their respective offices.

The apex court, therefore, asked the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to ensure compliance to the judgment by making sure that payment starts this year August and last March 2022.

By implication, the judgment of the Supreme Court did not in any way affect the preparation and conduct of the proposed local government election by the PDP led government slated for May 22, 2021.
