An Ambrose Alli University lecturer, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after reportedly collapsing in a hotel room in Ekpoma, Edo State, following an alleged sexual encounter with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to reports, the Ambrose Alli University lecturer had checked into the hotel with the woman before he reportedly became unresponsive in the room.
Police Arrest Three Over Lecturer’s Death
The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said three people have been arrested in connection with the death of the Ambrose Alli University lecturer.
The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the police received a report concerning Uwuigbe on October 5, 2026.
She said the lecturer had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and allegedly engaged the services of a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.
According to Ikoedem, the lecturer subsequently sent the woman to purchase water. When she returned to the hotel room, she reportedly found him lying dead.
The police spokesperson said the hotel owner, manager and the woman are currently in custody as investigations continue.
The circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death have not been conclusively established, and authorities are expected to determine the cause of death as the investigation progresses.
Ikoedem said the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
The police have not publicly established that the reported sexual encounter caused the lecturer’s death. The ongoing investigation is expected to establish what happened before and after Uwuigbe became unresponsive.
Ambrose Alli University Confirms Lecturer Was Staff
The Ambrose Alli University authorities have also confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of staff of the institution.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed the lecturer’s employment but stressed that the incident occurred outside the university campus.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life,” Aladenika said.
He also clarified that the woman involved was not a student of the university.
The university spokesperson said the incident occurred outside the institution and was therefore unrelated to the university’s activities.
