Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said that the institutions established by his administration will be difficult for future governments to dismantle, citing their roles in strengthening governance, public order and long-term development.
Makinde made the statement on Thursday while commissioning the newly constructed office complex of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA).
The governor said his administration would be remembered for establishing agencies that did not exist before 2019, adding that their continued operation would be important to the state’s development beyond his tenure.
Among the institutions he listed were OYRLEA, the Oyo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun; the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA); the Oyo State Project Performance Monitoring Agency; the Oyo State Mobilisation Agency for Socioeconomic Development (OYMASED); and the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA).
According to Makinde, the agencies were deliberately established to strengthen governance and promote long-term prosperity in Oyo State.
He added that any administration genuinely committed to the state’s progress should sustain the institutions rather than seek to dismantle them.
Seyi Makinde Highlights Importance of Rule of Law in Oyo State
The governor commended the Chairperson of OYRLEA, Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd.), for her diligence and commitment to upholding the rule of law.
He acknowledged that they had disagreed on some issues but maintained that he had no regrets appointing her to lead the Authority during its formative years.
“At the heart of good governance is the rule of law. When people know their rights and security agencies enforce the law without bias, you have order, investors come in, and the economy improves. That is what we have experienced in Oyo State,” Seyi Makinde said.
He stressed that his administration would be remembered not only for infrastructure development but also for establishing institutions designed to support good governance beyond his tenure.
Makinde challenged any future administration considering the abolition of OYRLEA, OYMASED, the Project Performance Monitoring Agency, Amotekun, OYACA or OYSADA, maintaining that the agencies were created to promote continuity and stability in governance.
Oyo Assembly Speaker Commends OYRLEA’s Achievements
The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, congratulated OYRLEA on the achievements recorded since its establishment.
In his goodwill message, Ogundoyin said the passage of the law establishing the Authority demonstrated the Assembly’s commitment to enacting legislation that addresses practical needs, strengthens public order and supports effective governance.
He highlighted OYRLEA’s responsibilities, which include enforcing laws relating to environmental protection, sanitation, waste control, road traffic management, open rearing and grazing, and other related matters.
The Speaker described these responsibilities as essential to the state’s development and urged the Authority to discharge its mandate responsibly and transparently.
He also called on residents, community leaders, business owners, motorists, traders and other stakeholders to cooperate with OYRLEA in carrying out its statutory responsibilities.
OYRLEA Chairperson Highlights New Office Complex, Enforcement Efforts
Earlier, Justice Aderemi described the commissioning of the new office complex and the unveiling of the Authority’s maiden magazine as significant milestones in OYRLEA’s development.
She said the achievements reflected a collective commitment to strengthening law enforcement, protecting the environment, maintaining public order and promoting the rule of law in Oyo State.
Aderemi noted that the Authority had intensified enforcement of the Oyo State Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law through monitoring, public enlightenment and collaboration with traditional institutions, local governments, security agencies and other stakeholders.
According to her, these efforts are aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence among farmers, herders and the wider public.
She commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his continued support and the Oyo State House of Assembly for providing the legislative framework that led to the establishment of the Authority.
The commissioning of the new OYRLEA office complex marks another development in the state’s efforts to strengthen its law enforcement institutions and improve the implementation of regulations governing public order and environmental protection.
